This 2nd sketch is painted according to a stone relief from Italy - 9th/ 10th century - (a national museum, Berlin). Concerning this one it is said that "The grail is the source of life and the vessel promising eternal life. The deer drinks out of it - a symbol for the soul thirsting for God. A horn of plenty (cornucopia), a symbol of plenty and of the renewal of the body, represents the connection between longing for eternity and the reconciliation of the divided nature of man in the resurrection, here symbolized by the two peacocks drinking from the upper goblet of the spirit."
